We got in very late and had to walk around to find a hotel. This was one time where we did not advance book, and coincidentally was also the last time we did not advance book! After walking around in a foreign town in the middle of the night, we FINALLY found a place that had space and wasn’t going to cost an arm and a leg. The nicest thing about this hotel was that it had nice space to do our first load of laundry!
For the trip, we packed laundry detergent sheets, as opposed to taking the extra liquid, and so far they are working great! We have learned many strategies for washing clothes in a hotel room! …like don’t wash when you get to a hotel in the middle of the night because your clothes will NOT be dry in the morning! Lesson learned.
After hitting up the tourist info center, we were jones-ing for a delicious (true) Belgian waffle! So we made our way to the Grand Place (Plaza) and got some waffles!
Steven’s was swimming in chocolate (very common in Europe), and I got mine with strawberries, bananas, and whipped cream. YUM!
Right when we got our waffles, it started to pour rain outside. This was the kind of rain where if you stand in it for 10 seconds, you are drenched head-to-toe. Luckily, I have an ace up my sleeve -- my wonderful, thoughtful husband -- who ran to a nearby store and bought us two, very stylish green Brussels ponchos.
It was raining so hard that we knew we weren’t going to have much success with touring on our own, so we decided to get some assistance. The Hop-on/Hop-off bus seemed to be the way to go for a day trip in Brussels, and I have to say that it was a great time!! Surprisingly, it stopped raining after the first few stops!
It took us around to all the main stops, including swinging wide up north to take us to the Atomium, and to see classic sites like the Mannekin Pis (peeing baby). The ride was short enough that we were able to ride it twice so that we can enjoy the whole tour from the top of the bus. It ended up working out quite perfectly then when the rain started again on the second half of our route.
This was the first time we didn’t tour on our own, and it was definitely a nice change of pace. The explanations were great, and it was very relaxing being off our feet for a couple hours.
We’re not done with Belgium and its waffles yet! Off to Brugge…
