The sleep was great and much needed after numerous consecutive nights of very little, poor sleep. Thank you, Germany, for not letting us down! We pulled in to Munich around 6:30 a.m. and were greeted by all smiling faces. Again, our old home didn’t disappoint! We quickly popped into a Starbucks to use the internet and plan the last few days of our trip. It feels very surreal to be in our final week, planning our last legs and booking our last hotels. It’s very fitting that we are spending our last days in Germany, though, because it is definitely our European home.
We settled on spending the rest of the day and the night in Munich, then heading out on Sunday morning. Planning for the day was difficult because this was definitely the Germany that we remember and somehow still love: cold and rainy! It was about 50 degrees and raining ALL DAY. No worries, though, as we still had our Brussels ponchos!
We were even lucky enough to stumble upon the tail end of a brewery parade! Every local brewery had a wagon with barrels and horses decorated in their brewery's ware.
There was a “free” walking tour offer that we found and decided that would be a fun, easy way to spend the day. Turns out it was FABULOUS! The great personality and knowledge of our tour guide was like a small sun during our rainy day. As he was doing his introduction, he said that he was from Indiana, and I of course had to let out a “Woot woot!” to that. He then said he was from a small town by Chicago, named Chesterton, which is where one of my really good friends is from. Turns out that this tour guide in Munich, Germany, went to high school with and is family friends with one of my friends from Indiana! Small flippin world!
We didn’t actually walk around to too many sites, but he gave us great history about the city and was able to answer any question we threw at him. Due to the cold and rain, very few pictures were taken. Even though we went to Munich three years ago, this was a completely different side of the city, and I loved every rainy minute of it!
Since we arrived in Munich so early, we were unable to check in to the hotel we found, so we had been going nonstop and unshowered for a very, very long time. After our tour, we knew exactly what it was time for. We got into our beautiful, dry room and took a three hour nap!! This was definitely a must. After resting our eyes, we made our way back into the rainy streets for a bite to eat, then got a great night’s sleep!
Tschuss, Munchen! Rothenburg, here we come!
